About our Team

Alix and Chris Harvey opened the Local General Store in May 2013.  Chris was formerly a principal, and later Associate Superintendent, in School District #61, and Alix was a special education teacher and later an ESL instructor at the University of Victoria. For 5 years, they extensively researched product sources, checked hundreds of items and producers on Vancouver Island, around the province and the Pacific Northwest, and visited as many local fairs and markets as possible. They found a great spot for the Local General Store in the Haultain Corners area and built a thriving business and community at the corner of Belmont and Haultain. In May of 2023, as Alix was turning her attention to a new adventure in farming Last Frost Farm on the Saanich Peninsula, Meagan Crosby (who had been one of the first staff of the Local) and Matt Humphrey (formerly of Arocha Canada) answered the call to become joint owners of the Local. They each bring a passion for supporting local farmers and artisans and telling the stories of the people and places that connect us to each other and to the land. They are thrilled to be part of the fabric of such a vibrant community and look forward to welcoming you to this vintage general store in the heart of Haultain Commons!
